Energy-Saving Market Offers Opportunities
The introduction of energy-saving technology could help Swedish technology company Alfa Laval grow its marine business despite a downturn in new ship orders, the company said on Tuesday.
At the company's Capital Markets Day in Copenhagen, it said it is committed to keeping or taking a leading position in ballast water treatment, sulfur emissions reduction, and waste fuel recovery and waste heat recovery solutions.
"We see interesting growth opportunities in two areas; environmental applications and energy-saving solutions" said Peter Leifland, president for the Marine & Diesel Division.
"With the acquisition of Aalborg Industries we have further strengthened our position in the marine industry.
"Today we have both newly launched and existing products to meet current and future legislation.
"Our offering within the environmental area as well as for energy-saving initiatives, is expected to mitigate the downturn in ordering of new ships at the yards."
Stricter marine legislation is driving demand for environmental solutions, while high fuel costs are pushing shipowners to find more efficient technologies.
Alfa Laval's products include PureBallast, which it calls the world's first chemical-free, IMO standard compliant ballast water treatment solution; PureSOx, a scrubber solution to reduce sulfur oxide (Sox) emissions; PureDry, a recently launched high-speed separator and decanter for waste fuel recovery; and two waste heat recovery systems.
In June, the company reported that Baltic ferry operator AS Tallink Grupp (Tallink) had installed the PureDry product on one of their vessels, cutting fuel costs by up to 2 percent.
