The Iberian Association of Natural Gas for Mobility (GASNAM) Tuesday announced that it will offer a basic level course on liquefied natural gas (LNG) as marine fuel at its Madrid headquarters of Puertos del Estado on September 22 and 23.

The course is said to be part of a pilot series of two courses on LNG bunkers, including one basic and one advanced, that GASNAM plans to offer in 2017 and 2018.

"Due to new restrictions on SOx and NOx emissions as well as the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime transport, LNG continues to progress as the alternative, ecological and available fuel to replace traditional fuel such as Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) or Marine Diesel-Oil (MDO)," explained GASNAM.

"Therefore, GASNAM will teach during 2017-18 two courses: basic and advanced level for professionals in the shipping and LNG supply sectors. Both courses have the goal to train professionals to be employed in this activity."

The basic level pilot course is said to be divided into a 10 hour theoretical section, followed by a content test, and a second five hour practical section, intended to train students how LNG bunkering is completed.

GASNAM says professionals will come from port sectors, as well as shipping companies, engineering companies, classification societies, gas suppliers, and transporters firms.

Last year, Klaipėdos Nafta signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GASNAM to cooperate on the standardisation of LNG bunkering operations.
