Hamburg Bulk Carriers (HBC) has ordered three bulk carriers that promise “extremely low consumption” of fuel, with an option for nine more vessels, the company has announced on its website.

The ships are being built by Qingshan Shipyard in China and use a modified version of a design by Finish company Deltamarin Ltd. (Deltamarin).

Model tests have shown that the ships will use less than 20 metric tonnes (mt) per day, and they will also have a “very shallow draft.”

The first of the 43,500 dead-weight-tonne (dtw) vessels is scheduled for delivery in the last quarter of 2014.

HBC anticipates that the new design will be able to outperform even other new bulk carriers.

Deltamarin said last month that it had received 59 orders for its fuel-saving B.Delta bulk carrier ships.
