Rolls-Royce plc (Rolls-Royce) has announced the launch of its next generation Energy Management (EM) System, which the company says will enable customers to reduce energy usage, fuel consumption, and operating costs while supporting environmental compliance.

Rolls-Royce says the EM System provides performance information to support a ship's compliance with Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) rules and International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations.

Available in in three packages, the EM System is offered with customisable modules that can be tailored to meet specific customer needs, including hull growth indication, hull condition monitoring, and custom operational KPI reporting.

"Golden Energy Offshore tell us that during trials of the Energy Management System on-board two of their UT 776 CD PSVs they have demonstrated fuel savings up to 15 percent. We were expecting a slightly lower figure, somewhere between 5 and 10 percent," said Marco Cristoforo Camporeale, General Manager of Intelligent Asset Management at Rolls-Royce.

Golden Energy Offshore, one of Rolls-Royce's Energy Management System pilot customers, have had two vessels equipped with a trial EM System since early 2015.

"For us, as a vessel operator, it is important to maintain a high focus on energy efficiency through our management system – which among other standards includes fully certified ISO 50001 (Energy Management) – and meeting the high goal we set on Energy Performance indicators," said Per Ivar Fagervoll, CEO Golden Energy Offshore.

"Through the Rolls-Royce Energy Management System, we are able to optimise the energy use on board by adjusting our switchboard configurations, with efficient use of the generators for standby sailing and when in DP mode. Accurate fuel consumption measured at an early stage also gives us the opportunity to adjust the vessels' speed and trim to save fuel."

The Energy Management System is also noted to have been installed on the newly delivered fishing vessel, Ramoen, and a Hurtigruten cruise ship.

NorLines has ordered Rolls-Royce's new EM System for two vessels the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered cargo vessels, Kvitbjørn and Kvitnos.

Last week, Rolls-Royce announced that it had signed a "groundbreaking" service agreement with Nor Lines, which will use "Big Data" to monitor, plan, and perform maintenance and repairs on Kvitbjørn and Kvitnos.
