Rolls-Royce plc (Rolls-Royce) Wednesday announced that it has signed a "groundbreaking" service agreement with Nor Lines, which will use "Big Data" to monitor, plan, and perform maintenance and repairs on Nor Lines' liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered cargo vessels, Kvitbjørn and Kvitnos.

In addition to the "Power-by-the-Hour" service agreement - said to be the first of its kind - Nor Lines has also ordered Rolls-Royce latest Energy Management System, which logs energy consumption and emission levels.

"Both the Power-by-the-Hour and Energy Management systems have been developed because we now have the capacity to digitally monitor onboard systems from on shore," said Knut Hovland, Director Customer and Services at Rolls-Royce.

"Our ability to record and analyse huge volumes of data means we can offer ships better and more comprehensive service agreements than we could just a few years ago."

The Kvitbjørn and the Kvitnos are noted to have been the first commercial vessels to be ordered with Rolls-Royce's NVC 405 Environship design - a concept that is said to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 percent compared to similar diesel powered vessels, depending on operational profile.

"Both the Kvitbjørn and the Kvitnos are high-tech ships, and we are in a situation where parties have what it takes to enter into a modern service agreement. That's why this contract was an obvious choice for us," said Rolf Herheim, Nor Lines' Technical Director.

"The crew on board is also looking forward to getting the solution up and running."
