Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival) today, as part of the release of its 2016 sustainability report and launch of its new sustainability website, "Sustainability from Ship to Shore," announced that the company is "ahead of schedule" on its goal of achieving a nearly 25 percent reduction in CO2e compared to the 2005 baseline.

The company notes that it is continuing to make progress in installing exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), with 59 percent of its fleet across its 10 cruise brands having been equipped with the technology by the end of 2016.

Meanwhile, 40 percent of Carnival's fleet was equipped with cold ironing capabilities by the end of report period, enabling those ships to use an alternative power source while at port.

The company also highlighted its efforts toward utilising liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel in its vessels.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, Carnival introduced the AIDAprima in 2016 - noted to be the first cruise ship in the world with a dual-fuel engine that can be powered by LNG while in port.

"We take our commitment to sustainability and the environment very seriously and take proactive measures to ensure that sustainability is ingrained in the core of our business practices," said Bill Burke, Chief Maritime Officer for Carnival, upon the release of the new report and website.
