MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MAN) says the dual-fuel MAN L23/30DF engine has passed its Type Approval Test (TAT) and has been granted a certificate for compliance with IMO Tier III regulations in gas mode without any after-treatment equipment.

"The L23/30DF covers a power range of 625 – 1,200kW, which makes it particularly attractive for such ocean-going vessels as bulkers of most sizes, general cargo ships, chemical tankers, and smaller LNG-carriers, as well as ships operating in ports and near the coast," said Finn Fjeldhøj, Head of Small-Bore for Four-Stroke Engineering at MAN.

"Encouragingly, shipowners around the world have already shown significant interest in the engine and we are very optimistic about its future prospects."

MAN notes that ESL Shipping has already ordered six L23/30DF GenSets for two 25,000 DWT cargo carrier newbuildings, which are currently under construction at the CSC Jinling ship yard.

Earlier this month, MAN announced that its uprated dual-fuel marine engine, MAN L51/60DF, had also received type approval after the company hosted a test programme of a nine-cylinder version of the engine, which ran on fuel oil (DMA) and natural gas.
