Petroleum tanker operator AET Tanker Holdings Sdn Bhd (AET) says it has received a very large crude carrier (VLCC) that will be among the "greenest VLCCs operating in today's market," with another to follow in December.

The company held a naming ceremony at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DMSE) shipyard in South Korea for the two 320,000 dead-weight-tonne (dwt) vessels, Eagle Verona, which will be chartered to an AET customer immediately, and Eagle Versailles, set to be delivered in two months.

The ships are expected to have Energy Efficiency Design Indexes (EEDIs) that are 16.9 percent better than the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) baseline, putting them within the acceptable zone for Singapore MPA's Green Shipping Programme.

The ships' fuel-saving technology includes a MAN B&W super-stroke electronically controlled main engine (G-ME engine), high-efficiency propellers with large diameter and low rpm, and DSME duct, rudder bulb, and propeller boss cap fins.

The ships are also fitted with eco-management systems including performance monitoring, trim optimisation, and weather routing.

"We are committed to operating a young, technologically advanced and clean fleet of petroleum vessels," said AET President and CEO Hor Weng Yew.

"Each new ship that joins our fleet will have a significantly lower impact on the natural environment than the vessel it replaces.

"The delivery today of Eagle Verona and Eagle Versailles cements our obligation to the environment and also meets our customers' requirements for clean, fuel efficient, modern and exceptionally safe tonnage."

AET took delivery of two previous eco-VLCCs earlier this year.
