Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics ASA (WWL) today said it is working to ensure a "level playing field" under the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) regulations to reduce CO2 emissions in shipping.

"Reducing fuel consumed per unit transported is the most efficient contribution to reduce CO2 emissions, and we work to influence IMO to form new regulations aiming to obtain a level playing field for the shipping industry," said WWL.

WWL says that, with advanced fleet performance monitoring systems from Shippersys AB (Shippersys) installed on all its vessels, the company is prepared for new Monitoring, Reporting, Verification (MRV) requirements.

To meet the requirement of future emission control areas (ECAs), WWL says it is working with industry partners to find the most cost-efficient and environmentally sound solution to meet sulfur regulations, and is engaged in a four-stream approach to explore different options.

"One initiative is installation and testing of scrubbers on board one of our existing vessels and installation on board our vessels," says WWL.

"We support the Trident Alliance initiative to ensure robust enforcement of maritime sulfur regulations and are willing to collaborate to help bring it about."

In February, Ship & Bunker reported that Craig Jasienski, CEO of WWL, said environmental performance is set to persist in modern shipping as a "failure-is-not-an-option" mission.
