ABB Signs Green Ship Agreement with Chinese Yard
ABB says it has signed an agreement with China's Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (Wuchang) to enhance the two companies' cooperation on the development of "greener," energy efficient ships and digital solutions.
"Chinese shipyards are diversifying their portfolios and ABB's long history of working in the icebreaking and cruise sectors is particularly relevant to China's ship builders," said Alf Kare Adnanes, head of ABB's Marine and Ports business in China.
"We are excited about the benefits this agreement will bring to both ABB and Wuchang Ship Building Group."
ABB says its power and propulsion expertise, as well as it focus on maritime software, will enable Wuchang to produce vessels that are both "highly efficient and technologically advanced."
"ABB has been operating successfully in China since the 1970's and we opened the Azipod propulsion factory in Shanghai in 2011," said Juha Koskela, Managing Director of ABB's Marine and Ports business.
"This agreement is a result of our commitment to the Chinese market and it will lead to a new generation of greener and smarter vessels being built in China."
In October, Ship & Bunker reported that ABB had been shortlisted for the "Energy Efficiency Solution Award" category of the 2016 Ship Efficiency Awards for its work on Tycho Brahe and Aurora, which it says will be the "largest emission-free ferries in the world."
