The captain and another crew member of a bunker tanker are in custody after the vessel collided with a fishing vessel off Incheon, killing 13 and leaving two others missing, South Korean media reports.

Seonchang-1, a recreational fishing vessel was carrying two crew members and 20 anglers when it collided with the bunker tanker Myeongjin-15 near Yeongheung Island at about 6 a.m. on Sunday.

Seven passengers were rescued after the Seonchang-1 overturned during the incident, 13 have been confirmed dead, and two other individuals are missing.

Upon questioning, the captain of the tanker is reported to have told the coast guard that he saw the fishing boat, but assumed it would steer clear of the larger vessel.

Issuing charges of professional negligence resulting in death, the Incheon Maritime Police has since arrested the tanker captain and another crew member who was absent from the steering room at the time of the collision, despite being on duty.

The coast guard is currently investigating the exact cause of the collision, including whether the captain of the tanker was speeding at the time of the incident.
