Alfa Laval has introduced a new biodiesel pretreatment system that will give makers of the alternative fuel more flexibility in their use of vegetable or animal fat feedstock, the energy technology company said in a statement published in Biodiesel Magazine.

The Advanced Glycerol Treatment (AGT) system is a prefabricated unit that can scale to handle 400 to 40,000 gallons per day.

As part of a biodiesel plant, the system reduces source material's free fatty acid content to 0.8 percent, facilitating the production of fuel and allowing processors to seek out the lowest-cost raw materials.

The company said the AGT offers low operational costs and low waste and does not require a catalyst.

Finnish company Meriarura Ltd. said in July that it made the world's first commercial shipment with a specialty biofuel that is virtually free of sulfur, using fuel made from byproducts of chicken, meat, and fish waste, but some in the petroleum industry have dismissed biofuels as a "gimmick."
