Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) has announced the introduction its Voyage Emissions Reduction (VER) system to save oil tanker cargo losses, fuel costs, and reduce emissions.

The system, which eliminates the problem of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from tankers during laden voyages, is being made in two versions, including an easy-to-install "reabsorption" version and a "fuel" version that uses the VOC as fuel for the vessel.

"Wärtsilä is dedicated to developing innovative solutions that reduce operating costs for owners, while at the same time contributing to a cleaner environment," said Timo Koponen, Vice President of Flow and Gas Solutions at Wärtsilä Marine Solutions.

"The VER system follows this philosophy by eliminating cargo waste and optimally lowering tanker fuel costs, thus enabling a payback time that can be less than one year."

Wärtsilä notes that the VER system meets all the regulation 15 requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) MARPOL Annex VI protocol, as well as port specific requirements for terminals related to VOC emission reductions.

The VER system will be officially launched at the Marintec conference and exhibition, which runs from December 5 to 8 in Shanghai, China.
