Van Heck Engineering B.V. (Van Heck) of the Netherlands has introduced a new pump system designed to quickly recover oil after off-spec or incorrect fuelling, grounding, or other disaster, the company said in an emailed press release.

"Everyone loses when oil is unintendedly spilt," the company said.

"Van Heck believes the Sea Trophy to be an invaluable tool for ship owners, salvors, coastguard, emergency first responders but also for those behind the scene, namely the oil companies and insurance brokers."

The pump is capable of removing oil at a rate of 70 cubic meters per hour at 100 cSt, and its small size - a length of 613 millimetres and diameter of 150 millimetres - allows it to enter tanks through pipes and work in small spaces.

Van Heck said the system "is the quintessential answer to new, upcoming shipping regulations" and growing industry interest in green shipping.

Efforts to develop new technology to handle oil spills have been growing since the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and governments, such as British Columbia, Canada's, are investigating responses to such events.
