Lloyd's Register (LR) Tuesday announced the development of new notation for low-flashpoint fuels (LFPF), with the aim of standardizing designs for vessels using liquified natural gas (LNG) bunkers.

LR said that the new standards will allow "owners and shipyards to demonstrate that their design and construction meet requirements".

It was said the notation will apply to ships where the main propelling and/or auxiliary machinery is designed to operate using a low-flashpoint fuel, and will cover fuels including natural gas, ethane gas, liquid petroleum gas, and methanol.

The group said the notation will cover both gas carrier vessels as well as ships other than gas carriers where low-flashpoint-fuelled machinery is used.

"The innovation in gas carriers and non-gas carriers using gas as a marine fuel has been tremendous over the last two years. Our new class notation LFPF is Lloyd's Register's response to the market's evolution," said Leo Karistios, Global Gas Technology Market Manager at LR.

It was noted that the standards follow the introduction of the revised International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code) and the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code).

LR said the notation will come into effect on January 1, 2016.

In June 2015, Ship & Bunker reported that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was adopting a new mandatory code for gas-fueled ships.
