ExxonMobil's Mobilgard 5100 Receives Wärtsilä NOL
ExxonMobil has announced in an emailed press release it has received a No Objection Letter (NOL) from Wärtsilä for its new cylinder oil, Mobilgard 5100, after a 2,000-hour field test showed the product could help eliminate the problem of cold corrosion in marine engines.
The oil major says Mobilgard 5100 has also recently become the first 100 BN cylinder oil to be included on Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) recommended Lubricating Oil List.
"The interim No Objection Letter from Wärtsilä is a further indication of how Mobilgard 5100 can effectively protect against costly cold corrosion issues," said Iain White, field marketing manager, ExxonMobil Marine Fuels & Lubricants..
"Mobilgard 5100's formulation delivers outstanding results at lower feed rates, helping optimise performance in acid neutralisation, deposit control and oxidation stability performance while reducing overall costs."
Wärtsilä's NOL includes the use of the oil in Wärtsilä's RTA, RT-Flex, and W-X engines, while the company has already received a NOL from Man Diesel & Turbo (MAN).
Cold corrosion occurs when engine cylinder temperatures fall below the dew point of the combustion gases creating the potential to cause significant liner wear, and ExxonMobil says it created Mobilgard 5100 in close collaboration with marine engine builders to specifically address this problem.
ExxonMobil will be available at SMM in Hamburg between September 9 and September 12, 2014 at stand A3.317 to talk to consumers about Mobilgard 5100 and other products.
In an interview in July, Iain White talked to Ship & Bunker about the history of cold corrosion, Mobilgard 5100, and the MobilGard Cylinder Condition Monitoring (CCM) Program which is says can helping operators to quickly identify an engine's liner wear rate due to corrosive wear.
