Viking Ocean Cruises Orders Two Fuel-Saving Ships
Viking Ocean Cruises says it has ordered two fuel-efficient new ocean cruise ships in addition to the Viking Star, which is now under construction and will start operations in early 2015.
All three vessels have hybrid engines, optimised hulls and bows, onboard solar panels, and systems to minimise exhaust pollution.
Viking Cruises Ltd. (Viking), which now offers river cruises, announced the start of the ocean cruise division last year.
The company said it chose to add the two new ships, Viking Sea and Viking Sky, after noting strong customer demand.
Viking Star's first season in 2015 is more than 70 percent sold out, and sales for 2016 trips are "well underway," the company said.
The new ships, set to debut in 2016, are sister ships to the Viking Star, with a 930-passenger capacity, making them smaller than most cruise ships.
MAN Diesel & Turbo (Man Diesel) said in June that it would provide diesel-electric propulsion systems for Viking Ocean vessels, and the ships would also use Alfa Laval's PureSOx sytem, which removes sulfur oxides (SOx) from exhaust gas.
