Silverstream Technologies (Silverstream) Tuesday announced that it has signed a new contract to retrofit its Silverstream System air lubrication technology on a vessel of a major cruise line - an order Silverstream says demonstrates the pressure within the shipping industry for enhanced operational efficiencies, increased bunker savings, and reduced emissions.

"There is a real demand from the cruise sector for clean technologies that are cost effective, easy to implement and operate, and deliver the efficiency benefits that are claimed," said Noah Silberschmidt, CEO Silverstream.

"Cruise operators are under increasing pressure to improve their sustainability, as well as reduce fuel consumption and their environmental impact."

The Silverstream System can be installed on newbuilds and existing ships, says the company, noting that the system's simple installation translates to less vessel downtime, reducing the cost of the technology by as much as 30 percent in comparison to similar products.

Further, Silverstream says the system uses 66 percent less energy and takes up less space onboard than other air lubrication systems.

"This new contract represents the confidence that the sector has in the Silverstream System as a viable technology that helps them to meet these challenges, as well as delivering a fast return on investment," said Silberschmidt.

As Ship & Bunker reported in September, following the long-term operation of the Silverstream System on the 40,000 DWT tanker MT Amalienborg, Silverstream and Shell confirmed the technology can provide consistent fuel savings of more than 4 percent.
