Improved engine efficiency against the industry benchmark for turbochargers would mean considerable savings on fuel for ship operators.

Based on the test results involving an actual engine, ABB Turbocharging said its equipment performed above the industry benchmark for low-speed turbocharging efficiency by 2%.

"The result of the measurement on an actual engine is a confirmation of our promise and commitment to continue to push for highest efficiencies and value for our customers," said Arie Smits, senior general manager, product group low-speed at ABB Turbocharging.

Units are usually measured against the turbocharger efficiency benchmark given by MAN Diesel & Turbo.

"ABB Turbocharging has now proven an exceptional 2% higher efficiency compared to this industry standard," the company said in a statement.

The higher efficiency translates into savings for ship operators, the company added.

"For marine operators the additional 2% efficiency increase achieved by the ABB A180-L turbochargers would mean annual fuel savings of up to $35,000 per vessel, depending on fuel price and load profile," it said.

The efficiency increase has been confirmed and verified by MAN Diesel & Turbo.
