Peru Accedes to Ballast Water Management Convention
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Monday announced that Peru has become the latest country acceded to the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention, bringing the total number of States party treaty to 51.
Claudio de la Puente Ribeyro, Ambassador of Peru to the UK, is said to have met IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim at IMO's headquarters in London on June 10 to hand over the instrument of accession.
With the 51 states accounting for 34.87 percent of the world's merchant fleet tonnage, IMO says the treaty still remains short of the required representation of 35 percent for entry into force.
Lim has since renewed the IMO's request for countries that have not already done so, to ratify the convention.
In May, Saint Lucia acceded to the BWM Convention, IMO's Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage Convention, and MARPOL Annex VI for Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships emissions.
