Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) says it has chosen Angus R. Frew, the chief executive of the UK Chamber of Shipping, as its new secretary general and CEO.

Frew will succeed Torben C. Skaanild, who is retiring this year as head of the Copenhagen-based international shipping association.

Frew will take the post on October 1, 2013, while Skaanild will take a supporting role for the following six months to help in the transition.

"Angus Frew has had a distinguished career in business and the shipping industry, in several parts of the world and brings so many special qualities to BIMCO," Skaanild said.

"BIMCO is very much looking forward to having him at the helm."

The organisation's executive committee also approved the promotion of BIMCO's chief shipping policy and economics officer, Michael Lund, to deputy secretary general.

That change means Lund will head up shipping policy and economic affairs for the group, while Deputy Secretary General Søren Larsen will continue to handle organsational, contractual, and legal affairs, and Deputy Secretary General Lars Robert Pedersen will be in charge of technical and operational affairs.

Skaanild said Lund's promotion reflects his "tremendous efforts on behalf of the organisation, notably in relation to the political processes in Brussels and Washington, and his constant focus on what is good for the industry."

Last month, BIMCO, which says it is the largest international shipping association representing shipowners controlling 65 percent of the world's tonnage, became the first international shipping association to open an office in China.
