Progress towards the take up of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers may not be as rapid as some previously predicted, but there is still plenty of evidence to suggest ship owners are mindful the alternative bunker fuel could still play a key role in the future.

Dynacom Tankers Management today are a case in point, with classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) saying it will class six of their Suezmax tankers under construction in China with a "Gas-Prepared" notation.

This means that, while the vessels will not be capable of burning LNG bunkers, conversion for them to do so in the future will be relatively straight forward.

This encompasses numerous design aspects, including specific materials being used, and having appropriate space to accommodate required features such as LNG bunker tanks.

The 157,000 dwt tankers are set for delivery in 2017 and 2018.

"Using natural gas as fuel enables owners to comply with the requirements of Emission Control Areas in North America and Europe, and can be cost-effective in the long term," said  BV's Marine & Offshore Technical Director, Jean-François Segretain.

"In publishing the Gas-Prepared notation Bureau Veritas sought to provide owners with the ability to switch to LNG in the future when market conditions are right."

Earlier this year DNV GL declared there were "no remaining major showstoppers for the use of LNG as fuel."
