The International Maritime Organization (IMO) says its assembly has unanimously endorsed the appointment of the Republic of Korea's Kitack Lim as the next IMO Secretary-General, effective January 1, 2016.

Lim will take over from current IMO Secretary-General, Koji Sekimizu, for an initial four year term.

The IMO Council elected Lim as Secretary-General in June, but the decision was subject to the official approval of the assembly.

"I hope we can come together as one to pave a new future for IMO, based on the noble efforts and achievements to date," stated Lim.

Lim is reported to have fulfilled the role president of Busan Port Authority from 2012 until July 2015, and is noted to have first participated in IMO meetings as part of the the Republic of Korea's delegation in 1986.

Lim, who served as the Republic of Korea's Deputy Permanent Representative to IMO from 2006 to 2009, is said to have been Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Flag State Implementation (FSI) from 2002 to 2004, among other various roles with the IMO.

Last month International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) Chairman Jens Maul Jørgensen levelled harsh criticism against the IMO, accusing the organization of having "no idea" of the market from the owner and operator side, and under-regulating bunker quality.
