Singapore and Denmark jointly said they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Friday aimed at strengthening maritime co-operation and relations between the two countries.

According to the statement, under the MOU the two countries will explore opportunities for collaboration in the areas of quality shipping, green shipping, as well as maritime research and development, education, and training.

The nations said they planned to co-operate to address the environmental impact of shipping, and will endeavour to support and implement international measures developed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to promote clean and green shipping.

The jointly issued statement said Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Transport, Singapore, and Mr Ole Sohn, Minister of Business and Growth, Denmark, signed the MOU at the Ministry of Transport in Singapore.

Mr Lui said he was "delighted that Singapore and Denmark have taken proactive steps to enhance bilateral co-operation in the maritime sector" and that the MOU will "enable our two countries to build on our common maritime interests and address the challenges ahead."

"Singapore and Denmark are both leading maritime countries with strategic interests in high-quality maritime services. The MOU provides a solid foundation for engagement in a range of maritime activities for the benefit of both Singapore and Denmark," commented Mr Sohn.

In April Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Research Council of Norway (RCN) said they signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to renew their maritime co-operation.
