Container Ship Blamed for Aruba Spill
An Aruba ports director is blaming a container ship for an oil spill off the coast of the Caribbean island, the Associated Press reports.
Alfonso Boekhoudt said the spill occurred early Tuesday, when crews tried to empty the ballast tank of Belgium-based Seatrade's Southern Bay and found it was filled with oil instead of water.
Boekhoudt said he didn't know how much oil was spilled, but two cruise ships and other boats were affected, although crews stopped it from reaching nearby beaches.
He said the Southern Bay, which visits Aruba every five weeks, was being prevented from leaving the island until its captain signed a culpability declaration for insurance purposes.
Seatrade operates a fleet of around 120 refrigerated (reefer) vessels, according to its website.
The company lists the Southern Bay as a 1997-built, Liberian flagged vessel with a capacity of 93 forty-foot equivalent units (FEU).
