"Most Sophisticated" Marine Emissions Monitoring System Delivered
United Kingdom-based Martek Marine says it has delivered the "most sophisticated emissions monitoring system ever built for marine use" to Daewoo for the world's largest Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), according to an emailed press release.
"The system is so unique that no other company was even willing to quote for the project," the company said.
The equipment was said to be unusual because of the range of emissions it can monitor, including the rarely measured chemicals benzene and nitrous oxide (N2O), as well as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxide (SOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon (CO), methane (CH4), total hydrocarbons, and non-methane hydrocarbons.
The company used specialised techniques to measure benzene at below 1 part per million.
"This is the biggest and most complex system ever built in the marine industry," said Steve Austwick, the company's emissions monitoring expert.
"The fact that no other supplier was prepared to take on this project underpins our position as the market leader."
Martek said it expects European Union (EU) legislation on emissions monitoring as well as emissions control areas (ECAs) to drive demand for complex monitoring systems.
The EU has said it will pursue monitoring, reporting, and verification systems for greenhouse gas emissions from ships starting in 2014.
