Philly Shipyard, Inc. (PSI) today announced that as many as four new "cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly" containerships for the Hawaii trade - which were originally announced in June - are intended for TOTE Maritime (TOTE).

"Philly Shipyard is very excited to have TOTE as its partner under the LOI and fully supports the efforts to introduce new vessels into the Hawai'i containership trade to replace aged ships in time to meet new environmental regulations," said Steinar Nerbovik, PSI's President & CEO.

In June, Ship & Bunker reported that PSI was in "advanced talks" with an unnamed Jones Act operator to establish a new shipping service in the Hawaii containership trade with up to four new, "state-of-the-art, cost-effective and environment-friendly" vessels.

At the time, PSI noted that the fleet of cost-efficient and eco-friendly container vessels is set to support the Hawaii trade route amid tightening emission regulations on shipping in 2020.

PSI says it has already begun construction of the vessels in order to support optimal delivery dates.

As previously reported, the first pair of newbuilds are slated for delivery in 2020, while the second pair is expected in 2021.
