Kandla Port has set it sights on becoming the second major port in India to receive a shore power facility, according to local media reports.

"In line with international conventions and the government's initiative to reduce pollution from marine sources, the port has invited tenders for installing power supply arrangements to ships calling at the port when they are alongside berth. The project will have 1 megawatt capacity and cater to four ships at a time for their lighting loads," Ravi Parmar, chairman of Kandla Port, was quoted as saying.

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, India's first major shore power solution was commissioned in September 2016 at V.O.Chidambaranar Port, formerly the Tuticorin Port.

The new facility at Kandla will also allow berthed tugs to connect to shore power.

The move is said to be part of wider environmental efforts by the port that envisage an expanding wind power plant along with roof-top solar power generation.
