New Wärtsilä Flexible Fuel Engine
Wärtsilä Corp. (Wärtsilä) says it has introduced a new engine that can operate on natural gas, heavy fuel oil (HFO), or marine diesel oil (MDO).
The company says the 46DF engine, designed for high-output markets including merchant vessels, cruise ships and ferries, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, and floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), provides fuel flexibility that reduces costs while accommodating emissions regulations.
"With this newly launched product, Wärtsilä has raised the industry standard even higher, since it offers simultaneously drastically lower specific fuel consumption, both in gas and diesel fuel mode, remarkably higher output, and extremely attractive lifecycle costs compared to any other alternative currently available on the market," said Lars Anderson, vice president of 4-stroke sales for Wärtsilä Ship Power.
The engine is compliant with International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Tier III requirements when operating on gas, and with Tier II regulations when running on liquid fuel oil.
Wärtsilä has predicted growing interest in dual-fuel engines as shipowners seek fuel savings and compliance with emissions rules.
