Katharina Stanzel, managing director of the trade group INTERTANKO, has said that a significant number of oil spills occur during bunkering and is urging the industry to address the issue, Platts reports.

Stanzel spoke as part of a panel at the International Chemical and Oil Pollution Conference and Exhibition 2013 in Singapore.

Torben Skaanild, secretary general of shipping association BIMCO, who was also on the panel, said an average of about 1.7 spills of 700 metric tonnes (mt) or more happened each year between 2010 and 2012, most occurring during bunkering.

Data from the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF) analysed by Platts shows that the industry has made progress, with about eight times as many large spills in the 1970s than between 2000 and 2009.

Of 7,844 small spills - less than 7 mt - between 1974 and 2012, 564 took place during bunkering.

A spill from a Brazilian refuelling pier hit nine Brazilian beaches last week.
