Wärtsilä Corporation says it has released a new dual-fuel engine capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) or marine diesel oil (MDO) on the U.S. market that meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 criteria.

The Wärtsilä 20DF engine is being marketed to global fleet owners that operate in the North American Emissions Control Area (ECA).

"The Wärtsilä 20DF will further accelerate the adoption of LNG as a marine fuel in the US," said Lars Anderson, 4-stroke vice president at Wärtsilä Ship Power.

"The ability to meet EPA Tier 4 emissions requirements without the need for exhaust after-treatment, while at the same time increasing the safety and operational flexibility for LNG vessels, provides significant value to our customers."

The 20DF is a medium speed engine and is expected to operate mostly on LNG in the U.S. market, switching to MDO as a pilot fuel or emergency backup.

The 20DF engine has already been chosen for new ships including Danish and Canadian ferries.
