Gaz Métro LNG, a subsidiary of Quebec natural gas distribution company Gaz Métro, will supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers for three new ferries that Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) is putting into service, the companies said in a press release.

"We are very pleased to be working with the STQ and actively participating in this innovative project, which is another example of the natural gas industry's relevance and credibility in supplying fuel to the transport sector," said Gaz Métro President and CEO Sophie Brochu.

"This is a major first for maritime transport in Québec, adding to the recent breakthroughs in merchandise road transportation."

Two of the ferries will be built in Canada by Chantier Davie Canada Inc. (Davie) and enter service in 2015, while Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani in Italy is building the third.

STQ President and CEO George Farrah said using natural gas allows it to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 percent.

"The STQ is determined to play an active role in the Québec Government's collective sustainable development strategy," he said.
