U.S.-based energy company WesPac Midstream LLC (WesPac) says it is seeking permission to export Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG) for purposes including bunkering.

The company's Vancouver subsidiary applied to the National Energy Board of Canada for a licence to export LNG from FortisBC Energy Inc.'s Tilbury LNG plant.

The licence would cover regional exports to small power plants and LNG bunkering operations.

"These customers would benefit from both fuel cost savings, as well as air emissions reductions, by displacing oil-based fuels with natural gas," the company said.

The company is planning a new single-jetty marine terminal in the Fraser river near the Tilbury plant to allow for export of the fuel by barges or ships.

A report released earlier this year found that LNG bunkering could be an important market for natural gas from the Canadian West Coast.
