A new energy consortium unveiled Wednesday plans to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel for shipping and other purposes in the U.S., the companies said in an emailed statement.

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (Clean Energy), Ferus Natural Gas Fuels (Ferus), GE Ventures, and GE Energy Financial Services announced the plans for the consortium, Eagle LNG Partners, at the High Horsepower Summit in Chicago.

"With massive amounts of domestic reserves, America is facing a generational opportunity to move to a more secure, less expensive and cleaner-burning fuel," said John Shepherd, managing director at GE Energy Financial Services.

"Eagle LNG Partners' mission is to provide customers with technology and know-how to confidently make the switch."

The consortium plans to identify U.S. locations to develop, own, and operate LNG production plants, and, in some cases, provide customers with transportation, delivery, on-site storage, gasification, and dispensing.

Clean Energy and Ferus both have experience with micro-LNG plants, and Eagle LNG Partners is looking at projects building upon the companies' operations in Florida, Washington, Colorado, North Dakota, Ohio, and Texas.

GE Ventures will provide support for commercial and technical innovation, while GE Energy Financial Services provides funding for energy projects.

Energy giant Shell has said it is also developing mini-LNG projects in North America, with a focus on maritime and other uses of the fuel, and it is considering similar efforts in Russia.
