Gard Tuesday issued an alert to remind members and clients of the coming implementation of the updated to the Airborne Toxic Control Measure for Auxiliary Diesel Engines Operated on Ocean Going Vessels At-Berth in a California Port (At Berth Regulation).

As Ship & Bunker has reported, from January 1, vessels will be required to use shore power and reduce emissions by 70 percent while at berth at a California port - an increase from the current required reduction of 50 percent.

"Members and clients with regulated container, refrigerated cargo or passenger vessel fleets calling at California ports are advised to take note of the at-berth regulatory changes entering into force on 1 January 2017," said Gard in the statement.

Gard also reminds members and clients that plans, which identify the method of compliance while at-berth at a California port and outlines how vessels in a given fleet will comply with updated regulations, must be submitted to the the California Air Resources Board (ARB) "well in advance of any planned port calls in 2017."

Last month, ARB issued an advisory to inform fleet and terminal operators of the coming implementation of the updated At Berth Regulation.
