The Canadian government has awarded a $63.4 million, two-year marine fuel oil contract to Imperial Oil Ltd. (Imperial), the Chronicle Herald of Atlantic Canada reports.

"This is a continuation of existing business to supply marine fuel to the federal government," said Merle MacIssac, spokesman for Imperial.

The contract is for fuel for the Department of National Defence and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, MacIssac said.

It involves the delivery of fuel to destinations in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia.

Imperial oil currently is determining what to do with a refinery it owns in Dartmouth, which processes about 88,000 barrels of crude oil per day, producing products including fuel oil.

The company put the facility up for sale in May 2012 because it was not reaching financial targets, but some observers have said it may not be able to find a buyer because of expensive upgrades that are needed.

Imperial has said it may convert the refinery to a tank farm if it does not find a buyer.
