Eagle LNG Partners, a group formed this year to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) production facilities for bunkering and other uses, has selected Jacksonville, Florida in the U.S. as its first project site, the Calgary Herald reports.

The plant, which should receive a final investment decision within months and be operational by 2016, will be the first of five in the nation.

"Our goal is to build out LNG infrastructure throughout the United States, starting with five locations, one of which is Jacksonville," said Dick Brown, chief executive of Ferus Natural Gas Fuels (Ferus), one of the companies in the partnership.

The Jacksonville plant will produce 300,000 gallons per day, and another plant of the same size is planned for Tacoma, Washington, with each of the facilities costing about $100 million.

The partnership also plans to build smaller 100,000 gallon-per-day plants in Ohio, Colorado, Texas, and possibly Canada, at a cost of $45 million each.

In addition to the shipping industry, the facilities will serve trucks and trains.

The formation of Eagle LNG Partners, composed of Ferus, Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (Clean Energy), GE Ventures, and GE Energy Financial Services, was announced in September.
