MAN Diesel & Turbo has today announced receipt of an order for four MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI dual fuel engines.

The company said Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. (DSME) had ordered the engines for use in two Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers being built for BW Group.

It said the engines comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier II specifications with the option of being upgraded to Tier III at a later stage.

"The ME-GI engine…gives shipowners and operators the option of utilising fuel or gas depending on relative price and availability, as well as environmental considerations," said MAN Diesel & Turbo.

The company also predicted continued growth in the use of dual fuel engines.

"MAN Diesel & Turbo sees significant opportunities arising for gas-fuelled tonnage as fuel prices rise and modern exhaust-emission limits tighten," it said.

The engines are being supplied for use on two 173,400 cubic metre capacity LNG carriers which are being built at DSME's Okpo shipyard in South Korea with an expected delivery date of 2017-18.

Wärtsilä Corp. recently said it is seeking to again work with MAN Diesel & Turbo on a new bunker saving and emissions reducing research and development initiative, dubbed HERCULES-2, and is awaiting EU approval under the 2020 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
