Singapore's Majestic Ferries has ordered four 33m catamaran passenger ferries with a design by Australia-based naval architecture firm Incat Crowther that will offer significant fuel savings, Ship Technology reports.

The vessels, powered by a pair of MAN D2862 LE463 main engines, will reportedly also have enhanced capacity and speed.

The vessels are currently under construction at Indonesia'sPT Cahaya Samudra shipyard and are expected to go into operation between Singapore and Batam upon completion.

With a cruising speed of 28 kilometres per hour, and a 200 passengers capacity, the contract is said to be an endorsement of Incat Crowther's expertise in developing fuel-efficient solutions that offer operators a "commercial advantage."

In May, DNV GL (DNV) announced that the 2015 Seatrade Award for clean shipping was awarded to the Norled owned and operated Ampere, the world's first fully electric driven vessel.
