Colombo Bunker Sales Receive Boost from Increased Container Traffic

Alongside a 13 percent increase in total ship arrivals during the first 11 months of 2015 at the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, services such as bunkering, repairs, and chandelling are said to have increased by 18.2 percent year on year as well, Port News reports.

The Port of Colombo says it has also reached 5 million container operations for the first time in history during the January to November period this year.

Total ship arrivals at the port are said to have increased from from 3,409 during the same period of 2014 to 3,854 in 2015, with container ships calls increasing from 2,957 last year to 3,333 this year, and conventional cargo vessel arrivals increasing from 25 in 2014 to 45 in 2015.

Arrivals of other types of cargo ships, including wet freight and RoRo vessels, during the 11 month period are reported to have increased from 328 in 2014 to 359 in 2015, a 9.5 percent growth.

The port reported handling 4,742,652 TEU during the first eleven months of this year, a 5.9 percent year on year increase.

In July, Ship & Bunker reported that Lakdas Panagoda, chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), said Colombo's port will be setting up a cruise terminal due to a growing number of cruise vessel calls.
