Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the country will lease the Port of Hambantota to investors, rather than selling it to China or any other country, as has been suggested in the media, Sri Lankan media reports.

Wickremesinghe, speaking at an awards event in Colombo, told local media that the country has received a $1.2 billion bid to lease the port.

"Now, we have negotiated with a Chinese company to lease the port out and in addition we have received bids to build three refineries from a Chinese, Arabian, and a U.S.-based company," said Wickremesinghe.

In August, Ship & Bunker reported that four bids had been made to the Sri Lankan government in response to its request for proposals (RFP) to operate the bunkering facility at Hambantota.
