The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) and the Busan Port Authority (BPA) will work together on environmental initiatives including eco-ships, the KR said in an emailed press release.

The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding promising cooperation on the development of an evaluation index for environmentally friendly vessels and green ship verification services.

The agreement also covers cooperation on renewable energy sectors, assistance for local businesses, and activities related to shipping through the Arctic.

"Continually introducing new and innovative eco-friendly initiatives is vital to the ongoing development of the port," said BPA President Lim Ki-tack.

"I expect this agreement to significantly enhance both our eco-related technical systems and our training."

In a commentary for Ship & Bunker in November, Captain David (Duke) Snider, CEO of Martech Polar Consulting predicted that Busan, as a major container port, could benefit from catering to ships travelling into the polar region.
