Ferry operator Scandlines' new hybrid propulsion ferry, M/V Berlin, Monday set sail on its maiden voyage between Gedser and Rostock at 6 a.m. local time, German media reports.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, Berlin features a low emission, diesel electric hybrid propulsion system powered by Corvus Energy's ESS (Energy Storage System) - the fifth Scandlines hybrid ferry to do so.

"I am very proud of the result we can present on Monday to our customers. The project has been associated with several challenges, but now when I'm walking around on the ferry, I am glad that we stood firm on our decision," says Søren Poulsgaard Jensen, CEO of Scandlines.

Berlin replaces the ferry M/V Prince Joachim, which next week will be delivered to European Seaways to continue operation in Greece.

Berlin is the first of two new hybrid ferries set to serve on the Rostock-Gedser route, with the M/V Copenhagen set to enter service later this year.

Earlier this month, Ship & Bunker reported that Scandlines' had christened its newest hybrid ferry, which was said to signal another bunker saving hybrid vessel is ready to join the world fleet.
