The Port of Rotterdam Wednesday announced that Terntank Rederi A/S' (Terntank's) liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered product tanker Ternsund is slated to arrive at the Port of Rotterdam on August 8, where it will be bunkered with LNG - a first for the port.

The arrival in Rotterdam is said to be part of Ternsund's maiden voyage, and will see the vessel first travel to the port's Vopak Botlek with a cargo of naphtha before moving to the Willem Alexander Terminal to be bunkered.

"The vessel is environmentally friendly and energy efficient with solutions to minimise harmful air emissions of the whole supply chain and is a result of the EU co-funded project 'Into the Future – Baltic SO2lution,'" explained Terntank.

The project is said to be a cooperative effort between Terntank, Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä), North European Oil Trade (NEOT) and Wega, an energy and environmental consultant, under the Zero Vision Tool.

Last year, the Port of Gothenburg said it was expecting to see an increase in LNG-powered ship traffic by this year, especially after LNG-powered vessels owned by Terntank, Furetank, and Thun Tankers became operational.

In June, it was reported that Tom Strang, senior vice president for maritime affairs at Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival), said the company and its subsidiary, AIDA Cruises, were working to overcome restrictions and regulations in the Port of Rotterdam that are currently preventing its new LNG powered vessel AidaPrima from receiving or using LNG bunkers there.
