The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) is hosting an event to explore new business opportunities for bunkering in Mauritius, the organization announced Tuesday in an emailed statement.

The event, which will be held over four days in October, is expected to offer basic bunkering training for the region, as well as relevant legal and business issues.

it will also reportedly examine the maritime development of Mauritius, along with potential investment opportunities.

IBIA Chief Executive Peter Hall said that the potential to develop the country as an international bunkering supplier and hub was "significant," noting that 300,000 ships pass through its port annually.

"The Mauritian Government is committed to developing its maritime economy, seeing it as an important driver of economic growth and is keen to create new opportunities across all sectors," Hall said.

"Mauritius occupies a strategic position in the Indian Ocean, offering an important base for shipping on the East – West trade routes and for businesses looking for a convenient doorstep to Africa and the Mauritius Port Authority already offers special port tariffs for bunker operations."

The IBIA also announced in August that it will be holding another forum during London International Shipping Week this week focusing on bunkering with new fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
