DFDS Seaways (DFDS) has reached an agreement with Forth Ports and the Scottish First Minister to continue operating Scotland's last freight connection to continental Europe, World Maritime News reports.

DFDS Seaways will continue to operate three round trips between the ports each week using Finlandia Seaways.

DFDS has been vocal about the impact it expects new Emissions Control Area (ECA) rules to have on its fuel cost and was said to be considering whether it would continue servicing the route.

"We have always been very committed to this route and we are very satisfied that with good dialogue with the Scottish Government and Forth Ports we were able to find a solution to maintain the service in light of the forthcoming sulphur requirements, which will pose enormous challenges for the transport industry," said DFDS CEO Niels Smedegaard.

DFDS said earlier this year that it was considering stopping service on up to seven routes as a result of ECA rule changes.
