Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is seeking passage of maritime bills that he says will help maximise the benefits of the industry, the news site AllAfrica reports.

The four bills, concerning the National Transport Commission (NTC), railway, ports and harbours, and inland waterways, are intended to help regulate the transport sector and have been forwarded to the National Assembly.

Nigeria announced early this year that it would legalise offshore oil product sales in an effort to boost taxable revenue and displace black-market supply of the products.

A Nigerian Army troop said Thursday that it has conducted 592 anti raids on oil theft and illegal bunkering operations over the past month, destroying 98 illegal refineries, 141 boats, 15 tanker trucks, 15 illegal fuel reservoirs, and 93 surface tanks, Nigerian newspaper the Daily Post reports.

"In line with our desire to eradicate crude theft, illegal oil bunkering and pipeline vandalism, the troops of 4 Brigade/Sector 1 Operation Pula shield have continued to arrest perpetrators of the illicit business while destroying implements used to carry out the crime," said Captain Abubakar Abdullahi, a spokesman for the brigade.
