The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) Thursday announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Spanish Association of Natural Gas for Mobility (GASNAM) to improve operations and objectives.

SGMF, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that promotes safety and industry best practices in the use of gas as a marine fuel, is said to be working with GASNAM to develop a standard for regulating liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply activities, a standard SGMF says is nonexistent in Europe.

GASNAM is said to represent the common Iberian interests related to LNG terminals, as the Spanish company has also expanded to Portugal.

"LNG terminals located on the Iberian Peninsula account for 50 percent of Europe's total capacities," said SGMF of the context in which the MOU was signed.

"GASNAM currently counts 66 members, with activities divided into two sections, each of them accounting for half of its members: terrestrial and maritime use of natural gas as a fuel."

SGMF also collaborates on the GASNAM coordinated UNECE Working Group of Experts on Gas, Task Force D.

In February, it was announced that SGMF had launched the first LNG bunkering safety guide.
