The Port of Algeciras reports that bunker suppliers there sold 2.9 million tonnes of fuel in 2012, its highest level ever.

Bunkering at the Spanish port dropped sharply in 2010, to 2.1 million tonnes, compared with 2.5 million in 2009, but then rose to 2.6 million in 2011, according to the port's website.

The port said 2012 saw it handle a total cargo throughput of 89 million tonnes, an 8 percent increase year-on-year, with coal, steel, and building and food products seeing the biggest jump.

Box volumes also rose, up 13 percent to 4.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

Ro-ro traffic moving across the Strait of Gibraltar hit its highest level ever for the port, at more than 240,000 units, an increase of 7 percent over 2011.

Liquid bulks going through the port declined by 1 percent to 22.7 million tonnes, while solid bulks rose 25 percent to 2 million tonnes, and general cargo was up 12 percent to 58 million tonnes.
