Bunker prices in South Africa's Durban have softened on improved supply at the port, Platts reports.

Data from Ship & Bunker showed IFO180 last Thursday dropped to $422.50/mt .

Marine gas oil (MGO) also fell to $738.50/mt

It is understood supplies had come under pressure after a temporary shutdown of the SAPREF refinery, a joint venture between Shell and BP, moved its planned maintenance forward last month after a fire.

One local supplier said Engen sold more product than expected following the refinery shutdown, and so has only began quoting consistently again last last week.

In 2013, the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) was reported as saying that South Africa has "enormous potential" for bunkering, but would need big policy changes to realise it.
